Junior Phase Information
Welcome to the Junior Phase of your child’s learning journey!
At this stage, we focus on building a strong foundation using an adapted DCAPS curriculum, specifically designed to support the individual needs of each learner.
🎯 What is our aim?
Our goal is to develop each child holistically—emotionally, socially, and academically—while nurturing independence and self-confidence in a caring and structured environment.
🧠Key Focus Areas
In the Junior Phase, your child will learn to:
Develop independence and social skills (like taking turns and sharing).
Adapt to daily classroom routines.
Understand and manage their emotions.
Focus on short tasks with growing concentration.
Socialise with classmates respectfully.
Each child works at their own pace, guided by an individualised support programme tailored to their needs.
A Day in the Junior Phase
Much of the day is spent learning through play and hands-on experiences. Learning takes place through the following:
- Songs and sing-alongs that teach language, counting and general knowledge
- Fine motor activities like beading, colouring and playdough
- Gross motor development through physical play and coordination exercises
- Language activities such as rhymes, stories and songs
- Incidental reading (e.g. recognising shop names, signs like hospital, danger, or police)
- Early phonics and beginning sounds
- Basic maths foundations
- Life skills, including dressing, tidying and hygiene
- Social learning: sharing, respect and discipline

🏠Homework Approach
No formal homework is given to learners in the Junior Phase. However, families are encouraged to support their child’s development by practising important skills at home. These include dressing and undressing independently, tying shoelaces, throwing and catching a ball, colouring within the lines, recognising colours, counting and learning personal information such as their name and address.

Working together
We value and appreciate your partnership. You can support your child's development by encouraging independence at home. Reinforcing moral values, discipline and following and supporting the school's code of conduct.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your child's teacher or the school.
