George Athletics Tour 2022
Merryvale’s athletics team had the opportunity to compete in Carpe Diem’s annual athletics day on the 23rd February, 2022. Our learners did exceptionally well and displayed commitment and passion throughout the tour. The learners showed us what excellent behaviour and top-notch manners are. The feedback and compliments received from Carpe Diem’s staff members were out of this world. We want to thank every athlete who made the best of this opportunity.
The athletes participated in track and field events and dominated in every aspect, with some outstanding performances.
- Shaquil (TURBO) Daniels brought his jet shoes and ran the 100m in 11.7 seconds in the u/16 and u/18 races. Shaquil also came first in the u/16 boy’s shotput.
- Calvin Kettledust achieved the longest jump in the u/16 boy’s long jump.
- Emile Korkie broke Carpe Diem’s u/18 boys long jump record.
- Blake pushed a record distance of 9.78m in the u/18 boy’s shotput.
- Ednicha Cummings: 1st in the u/18 girl’s 100m race.
- Lucinda Booysen: 1st in the u/17 girl’s 100m.
We would also like to congratulate Shaquil Daniels and Ednicha Cummings on being elected as Athletic captains for 2022.
On behalf of Mrs Gouws, Mrs Van As, Mr Manasse and Mr Schmidt, we would like to thank you and congratulate all 19 excellent athletes. This tour would not have been the same without all your hard work and dedication. We are incredibly proud of all of you!
Emile Korkie, Shaquil Daniels and Ednicha Cummings were also selected to represent the district at the Special Schools Olympic games.
Netball 2022
At Merryvale School, we offer netball and ball skills as part of our co-curricular programme.
The learners that can play netball or have the potential to learn how to play are divided between our two netball coaches – Mrs Van As and Miss Williams. These staff members take great pride in supporting and guiding our learners in acquiring the skills necessary to master the game resulting in our learners’ daily learning and general improvement.
We were privileged to participate in the E.C. Special School Olympics Netball this year, and three of our girls were selected for the Port Elizabeth District team.
We played three netball matches in the second term against Lonwabo Special School, Luthando Luvuyo Special School and Quest School and are very proud to have won two of the three matches. Thank you to the participating schools for your willingness to help our precious high-needs learners experience what our mainstream learners take for granted.
Soccer 2022
Merryvale has had the opportunity to plan and organise soccer matches between various schools during the second term.
Our learners thoroughly enjoy being part of the soccer team and interacting and socialising with learners from other schools.
Merryvale was invited to participate in the Special Schools’ Olympic District Games where three of our soccer boys were selected to represent the district. Unfortunately, the games were held during the school holidays, making it difficult for our learners to participate. We, however, want to congratulate Haylon Coltman, Dehego Smith and Calvin Kettledas on your selection.
We are proud of what our junior and senior teams have produced thus far and are even more excited to see what the remainder of our matches have in stall for us.
We wish our soccer boys all the best for the matches they have left for the year. We know they are going to make Merryvale proud.
A special thanks to our boys for always trying their best and having a ‘never give up attitude’ and staff members committed to putting together two successful soccer sides.
